While enquiries are growing across several sectors, military applications currently account for the strongest demand, particularly for USVs.

The trend reflects the requirements of operators working in environments where safety, endurance, range and reliability are critical. Alongside military interest, Cartello is also seeing signs of wider adoption, with recent applications including a water ambulance and yacht tender, as well as new enquiries from commercial fishing and workboat operators.

Why diesel is gaining ground in military and USV applications

For military and uncrewed vessels operating in demanding conditions, propulsion needs to deliver more than speed and power.

Cartello identifies safety and long service life as important considerations for its USV customers, alongside the control flexibility required for autonomous vessel applications.

These requirements reflect a wider change Cox Marine is seeing in the USV sector. As autonomous systems become increasingly sophisticated, propulsion must work as part of the wider vessel architecture, providing the uptime, predictability and interoperability needed for long-duration and remotely operated missions.

Cox Marine’s USV outboard integration work has therefore focused on enabling its diesel outboards to integrate with vessel control systems, autonomy and navigation stacks, power management systems and mission-specific payloads.

The role of diesel propulsion in emerging USV programmes can already be seen internationally, with both the STORMRUNNER USV and Leidos Australia’s Sea Archer configured with twin Cox 300 V8 diesel outboards to support high-speed, long-endurance operations.

Fuel efficiency and range strengthen the operational case

Fuel efficiency is another factor influencing the move towards diesel.

Cartello estimates that Cox Marine diesel outboards can deliver approximately 30 to 35 percent lower fuel consumption than comparable petrol alternatives, an advantage that can translate into increased operational range for military and high-use commercial vessels.

Fuel commonality can present an equally important operational advantage. Military and commercial motherships may already rely on diesel, meaning their tenders and support vessels can use the same fuel rather than requiring a separate petrol supply. Cartello says compatibility with commercial and military-grade diesel can simplify fuel logistics and reduce operational complexity.

These characteristics are among the reasons diesel propulsion is suited to demanding government and defence operations, where reliability, safety, fuel efficiency and long-term durability can all influence propulsion decisions.

Read more about diesel outboards for government, defence and first responders.

Adoption is broadening beyond defence

Although military and USV applications are currently leading demand for Cartello, there are indications that diesel outboard adoption is broadening across the Italian market.

One recent installation saw a pair of Cox diesel outboards fitted to a water ambulance. In this application, Cartello says the decision to use diesel was primarily driven by safety considerations and compliance with Port Authority requirements for this type of vessel.

Emergency and rescue vessels are an area where range, reliability and performance under demanding conditions are particularly important. Elsewhere in Cox Marine’s global network, the King George search and rescue vessel in Western Australia uses twin Cox 300hp V8 diesel outboards, providing another example of diesel outboard propulsion in emergency-response operations.

Discover how diesel outboards are being used for search and rescue.

The advantage of a single fuel source

Cartello has highlighted a tender application where safety and lower fuel consumption helped drive the decision to use Cox diesel propulsion. A further practical advantage was the ability to use the diesel already available aboard the mothership, removing the need to carry and handle a separate petrol supply specifically for the tender.

This common-fuel approach illustrates how the case for diesel can extend beyond the engine itself. For operators, propulsion choice can influence fuel storage, refuelling processes, range and wider vessel logistics.

A growing market for diesel outboards

Cartello expects demand for diesel outboards to grow significantly over the next three to five years, with military opportunities and increasing awareness among end users expected to contribute to market development.

Italy therefore provides an interesting example of how the diesel outboard market is evolving. Military and USV applications may currently be leading demand, but interest from emergency response, workboat, commercial fishing and tender operators indicates a much broader opportunity.

As vessel requirements become more demanding and operators place increasing emphasis on safety, range, fuel efficiency, reliability and integration, high-powered diesel outboards are finding a role across an increasingly diverse mix of marine applications.

Have a new build or repowering requirement in Italy, Malta or Croatia?

Get in touch with Cartello to discuss your requirements and discover how Cox Marine diesel outboards can support your operation.

Military and USV demand is leading diesel outboard growth in Italy.
