What is your role at Cox Powertrain?

I am a Principal Engineer here at Cox with responsibility for Product Development and Test. This involves defining and delivering a test programme to ensure that the product meets the requirements of the customer in terms of performance and adherence to legislative controls for their markets.

What first attracted you to Cox Powertrain?

There are really three main reasons that I was attracted to Cox Powertrain: the innovative product, the interesting application and the dynamic nature of the company.

There are a number of great ideas being developed across the product and it’s very exciting to see it all coming together. I have spent most of my career in the automotive field and to see methodologies based in that field being applied to develop a diesel outboard engine is really interesting. The company itself is growing all the time: the people I am working with are constantly developing new ways to develop the product and the processes we are working with.

What do you think Cox Powertrain stands for?

Overall, I think we stand for innovation; it’s key in a company trying to pursue and achieve something like this.

Cox has a can-do attitude, everyone is enthusiastic and driven to make this idea come to fruition.

What is your most challenging moment/event up until now?

In larger companies you have access to experts and to libraries of standards; these are not available in a small company like Cox. This means we are often working new solutions from the ground up. We are fortunate to have a great team, so while challenging, this does mean that we are able to really look at established methods with fresh eyes.

What you have gained since working here? Skills, friends, confidence etc.

We have been developing new test methods to suit our engine and also to bring automotive test methods to a marine outboard – I have learnt a great deal about the outboard segment, including completing RYA level 2 Powerboat for first hand testing!

What sort of person is right to work at Cox? What sort of person are we looking for? Skills, enthusiasm, tenacity etc.

I feel the right kind of person to work at Cox is someone who is imaginative, who can think freely and come up with innovative ideas. Working together is at the heart of Cox, so someone who is flexible and can work well with others is important. The ideal candidate doesn’t have to have knowledge in marine, but should be willing to learn new skills and apply them in a very dynamic environment.
