A well-established marine engineering partner

Founded in 1994, LB Tender Mechanics has built a reputation for delivering high-quality marine engineering and technical services across multiple sectors.

Today, the company employs 29 specialists across its facilities in La Ciotat, Marseille and Saint Martin, with fully equipped workshops at each location. Its team includes highly trained marine technicians and engineers with expertise spanning diesel engines, propulsion systems and marine electronics.

As an official distributor and service partner for leading marine brands, including Cox Marine, Volvo Penta, Yanmar, MerCruiser, Steyr Motors, HamiltonJet and Humphree, LB Tender Mechanics offers a comprehensive support model, from initial commissioning through to diagnostics, maintenance and warranty services.

Crucially, the business also delivers mobile service capabilities, ensuring fast, onsite support for vessel operators across its service regions.

To understand more about the French market and the growing role of diesel outboards, we spoke with Laurent Breyton, CEO of LB Tender Mechanics.

Where are you currently seeing the strongest demand for the Cox V8 300?

The strongest demand for the Cox V8 300 diesel outboard comes from the commercial and yachting sectors, where operators are focused on performance, efficiency and long-term operating costs.

Compared to petrol outboards, customers are seeing clear advantages in reduced fuel consumption and lower operating costs, particularly where engines are running high annual hours. Diesel also simplifies fleet fuel management, especially for operators already using diesel across their vessels.

What are the key decision drivers for customers, and what benefits are operators seeing after switching from petrol to diesel outboards?

For most customers considering the Cox V8 300, the decision is ultimately driven by operational efficiency and long-term value. Commercial operators and superyacht owners are increasingly looking for solutions that reduce fuel consumption, lower running costs and extend cruising range, while also delivering the reliability needed in demanding environments.

A significant advantage for Cox Marine outboards is the ability to integrate seamlessly into existing diesel-powered fleets. By operating on the same fuel as the vessel’s primary engines, operators can simplify fuel management and logistics, eliminating the complexities associated with carrying multiple fuel types. The inherent safety benefits of diesel fuel, combined with the engine’s high torque output and robust engineering, are also key considerations for many customers.

Once operators make the switch from petrol to diesel outboards, the benefits are typically both immediate and measurable. Many report noticeable reductions in fuel consumption and overall operating costs, alongside fewer refuelling stops thanks to the engine’s extended cruising range. Reliability is another major factor, particularly in commercial applications where downtime can have a direct impact on operations. The Cox V8 300’s durability and serviceability help maximise vessel availability, while its strong low-end torque delivers excellent performance for vessels operating under heavy loads or in challenging conditions.

For many operators, the combination of lower lifetime operating costs, improved fleet efficiency and dependable performance makes the transition to diesel a compelling business case.

Can you share examples of applications?

We’re currently supporting several high-profile and demanding applications.

One example is the installation of four Cox V8 diesel outboards on tenders for the Orient Express yacht project. We’ve also delivered installations on crew boats with aluminium hulls and yacht tenders operating intensively on a daily basis.

In these cases, operators required a propulsion solution that was robust, reliable and efficient under continuous use. Diesel compatibility with the mothership simplifies onboard logistics, while the engine’s high torque characteristics ensure strong performance under heavy loads.

How is the diesel outboard market evolving in France?

Diesel outboards are still relatively new in France and neighbouring markets, but awareness is growing quickly, particularly among professional operators.

We are seeing steady growth in demand, driven by rising fuel costs and a stronger focus on reducing total operating costs. There is also the increasing trend towards fleet standardisation around diesel fuel, which naturally supports the adoption of diesel outboards.

Are there still barriers to adoption?

There are still some barriers to wider adoption. The initial purchase cost is higher than traditional petrol outboards, and overall market awareness remains limited, particularly in the recreational segment in France and Corsica.

Some operators are not yet fully familiar with the long-term cost savings, so education and demonstration continue to play an important role. Like many diesel solutions, engine weight can also be a consideration depending on the application.

How do you see demand evolving over the next 3–5 years?

We expect demand to continue growing steadily, particularly across commercial, professional and superyacht sectors.

As operators increasingly prioritise fuel efficiency and cost reduction, diesel outboards will become a more attractive alternative to large petrol engines.

From our side, LB Tender Mechanics remains focused on supporting the long-term success of Cox Marine in the French market. We will continue to expand the Cox Marine service and dealer network across France, while investing in technical support, training and aftersales service to ensure customers receive the highest levels of expertise and support throughout the ownership experience. We are also working closely with Cox Marine to build greater market awareness and strengthen the brand’s presence, such as our participation at NAVEXPO, while supporting vessel builders and operators at every stage of the journey, from initial specification and installation through to ongoing maintenance and long-term service.

Strengthening the network

With its combination of technical expertise, regional presence and forward-looking investment, LB Tender Mechanics plays a key role in supporting Cox Marine customers in France and Corsica.

As demand for efficient, durable and commercially viable propulsion solutions continues to grow, partnerships like this ensure operators have the expertise and service support they need, both at specification stage and throughout the lifecycle of their vessels.
