Greek emergency response highlights the value of diesel outboards in frontline operations

As coastal wildfires continue to present significant challenges for emergency services, specialist marine assets are playing an increasingly important role in supporting frontline response efforts.

In Greece, the Greek Fire Service has deployed a fleet of Rafnar fast response vessels to assist with coastal firefighting, rescue operations and civilian evacuations. The vessels have been used during major wildfire incidents, helping emergency responders access areas that are difficult or impossible to reach by land.

Designed to operate close to shore, the 12-metre boats can transport firefighters, support evacuation efforts and provide direct firefighting capability from the water.

Configured with three Cox Marine diesel outboards producing a combined 1,050hp, the vessels deliver the speed, range and reliability needed for rapid response applications. According to the report, the boats can reach speeds of up to 50 knots while offering a range of approximately 250 nautical miles.

“It is a privilege to provide the Greek Fire Service with the dependable power of Cox engines for their Rafnar vessels,” says Zois Efstathiou, CEO of ZOIS EFSTATHIOU S.A.

“Knowing that our equipment supports their crucial rescue and firefighting operations, ensuring both speed and safety, is a source of immense pride for our entire team.”

For emergency response organisations, propulsion systems must do more than deliver performance. They must provide operational endurance, dependable running in challenging conditions and integration with diesel-powered fleets already used across many public service and government organisations.

As climate-related events place increasing pressure on emergency services worldwide, the ability to deploy personnel and equipment quickly can make a critical difference. The Greek Fire Service’s use of Cox Marine V8 350 powered Rafnar vessels highlights how advanced marine technology is helping responders reach communities, support firefighting operations and carry out rescue missions when every minute matters.
