Repowering Commercial Boats and RHIBs: A Smarter Route for Fleet Performance

For operators of commercial boats and RHIBs, reducing running costs and improving reliability is an ongoing priority. As a result, the shift from petrol to diesel propulsion is becoming a key driver of change. While this transition is often associated with new builds, repowering existing vessels is proving an equally effective route. By replacing ageing petrol engines with modern diesel outboards, operators can extend vessel life, improve efficiency and simplify fuel logistics, without the cost and downtime of a full vessel replacement.

A recent 7.8m RHIB modernisation project, delivered by Cox Marine and UK & Ireland distributor, Barrus, shows how this approach is being applied in practice. The project assessed replacing petrol outboards with the Cox Marine V8 300 diesel outboard, evaluating both twin and single engine configurations. Findings showed that a single Cox 300hp engine installation could deliver performance comparable to the previous setup, while requiring minimal modification to the vessel.

For operators in patrol, security and offshore support roles, the wider benefits of repowering are clear. Updated propulsion can reduce fuel consumption, with real-world results showing a reduction of more than 30% fuel savings in certain cases, lower maintenance requirements and improve reliability, helping to maximise uptime in mission-critical environments. Moving from petrol to diesel also brings operational advantages, including improved safety, single fuel source, and longer service intervals compared to equivalent petrol outboards in demanding conditions.

Diesel outboards further support this shift. Combining the efficiency and robustness of diesel with the flexibility of an outboard configuration, they allow for simpler installation, easier maintenance and better use of onboard space. For fleets looking to move away from petrol, this type of repower can also support a single-fuel approach, simplifying logistics across operations. Projects like the Barrus RHIB point to a broader shift across the Commercial and Governmental sectors; one that is making better use of existing assets.
